Lesson 1
Respond to their name

Your pet looks at you every time you say their name.
- 1. Say the name once in a happy voice
- 2. Reward the moment they look at you
- 3. Repeat 10 times in a quiet room
- 4. Practise in new rooms, then outside
Never use their name to scold — keep it a happy word.
Reliable basic cues for everyday safety.
- 1. Lure a sit with a treat above the nose
- 2. Say 'sit' as the bottom touches the floor
- 3. Add 'stay' for 2 seconds, then 5, then 10
- 4. Call 'come' from a short distance and reward big
Stop while your dog still wants more — 5 good reps beats 20 tired ones.

- 2. Wait until they stop sniffing, then reward from the other hand
- 3. Say 'leave it' before offering the fist

This cue can save your dog from eating something toxic.
